The internet is a powerful tool and can open some doors to some incredible places but it is also a bit of a double-edged sword, and if you have kids using it they need to know the difference between safe web browsing and unsafe. They need to understand that not everyone is out there to be their friend and they need to be wary in the event that someone might be looking into them.

It’s pretty easy to do – especially if your child knows they should not talk to strangers. The same really applies to the internet with a few subtle differences. Deleting and avoiding emails from unfamiliar senders and not responding to instant messages from strangers are all great places to start but there are other dangers. Social networking sites can’t always keep track of everything that goes within their borders and stalkers can often use these areas to access unsecured information. If your children are too young to understand the dangers of e-stalking then they should not be allowed to enter these social networking areas until they do.

You should also consult with your wireless internet providers as well. Some of them offer tips and tricks that can point you in the right direction when it comes to protecting your children. However, ultimately, you need to learn to make your child aware of the dangers so they can protect themselves.
